I Dropped My Phone in the Pool. Here's What Actually Saved It.
It slipped out of my hand at the shallow end. Here's the honest play-by-play of what I did next — including the thing I almost got wrong.
It happened in the least dramatic way possible. I leaned over to grab my towel, my phone slid out of my shirt pocket, and it was at the bottom of the shallow end before my brain even registered it. Chlorinated pool water — which, as I'd later remember, is worse than clean water.
The first thing I almost did wrong
My instinct was to press the side button to check if the screen still worked. Don't. Running a live circuit while the phone is wet is exactly when a short does damage. I stopped myself, held the button to power it off instead, and pulled off the case.

Because it was pool water and not tap water, I gave the outside a quick, gentle rinse with clean fresh water to wash off the chlorine, then dried it thoroughly with a soft cloth. The boring step that mattered most
I did not charge it. I left it powered off on a dry shelf overnight. The next morning I powered it on, tested every speaker and mic, and it was completely fine.
What I'd tell you if it just happened to you
- Power it off — don't press buttons to "test" it.
- If it was salt or pool water, rinse gently with clean water, then dry.
- Run a tuned sound cycle, speaker-down, to clear the grille.
- Don't charge it until it's fully dry — hours, not minutes.
- Because it was pool water, I still keep half an eye on it — corrosion can show up days later. If yours acts up, get it looked at.
