How Sound Gets Water Out of Your Speaker — the Science

Playing a tone to push water out of a phone speaker sounds almost too simple to work. But it is based on real, well-understood physics — the same trick your smartwatch uses to clear its own speaker after you swim. Here is exactly what happens, why it is safe, and where its limits are.

1. A speaker is a moving surface

Inside every phone speaker is a thin diaphragm that moves back and forth to make sound. When water gets trapped in the tiny openings of the speaker grille, it sits right on top of this moving surface, muffling the sound and making it crackle.
